YouTube Is Killing YouTube

YouTube was once the go-to place for high-quality, independent content. Now? It’s becoming a frustrating mess of ads, paywalls, and desperate sponsorships.

Enter YouTube Premium—a service that promises an ad-free experience but somehow still leaves us bombarded with in-video sponsorships. Creators like Veritasium, Kurzgesagt, MentourPilot, and Cleo Abram (Huge If True) produce incredible content, but they’re caught in a system that forces them to balance YouTube’s monetisation with brand deals just to stay afloat. And the result? A user experience that’s slowly becoming unbearable.

Want to watch a 10-minute video? Get ready for multiple ad interruptions, plus a built-in sponsorship segment. No wonder so many people are looking for alternatives.

So, where do we go from here? Free, high-quality content still exists. Public broadcasters like ABC’s iView and SBS On Demand continue to provide educational and entertainment content without the relentless commercial pressure. Globally, platforms like PBS and Nova have proven that there’s a better way—one that values viewers over ad dollars (Nova & PBS).

Maybe it’s time for public broadcasters to step up and offer an alternative for well researched, independent, and easy-to-digest information. Because if YouTube keeps making itself unwatchable, we’ll all be missing out on the richness YouTube (still?) provides.
